WHEN AND WHERE IS THIS THING HAPPENING?
The festival will be held March 30-April 2, 2017, with a pre-party featuring Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes on March 29. Expected venues include the Detroit Film Theatre at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Cinema Detroit, the Fillmore Detroit and Emagine Theatres. More will be announced as the festival nears.
WHAT KIND OF MOVIES WILL YOU BE SHOWING?
Documentaries. More specifically, documentaries with particular relevance to Detroit, metro Detroit or Michigan. We’ll feature films that explore issues that are important to the region, highlight its indelible personalities and celebrate it uniqueness.
DO YOU HAVE AN OFFICIAL SUBMISSION PROCESS?
Freep Film Festival is a curated, rather than submissions-based festival. The lineup will be built by Free Press festival staff in collaboration with venue partners.
I HAVE A FILM YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN. DO YOU WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT?
Absolutely. Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Include your contact info and a description of the film, along with whatever press materials you might have. Please don’t blow up our inbox with full movie files, but we’re very open to links to trailers or whole films. We cannot promise feedback or that your movie will definitely be viewed. Remember: The festival will focus on documentaries with strong Detroit or Michigan connections, though we’ll also be showing some films without specific ties that have resonance in the region.
WHEN WILL THE LINEUP BE ANNOUNCED?
We’ll have the lineup wrapped in early 2017, and will be announcing it in late February/early March. Lineup announcements will be made here, at freep.com and the print edition of the Detroit Free Press.
WILL THE FREEP FILM FEST BE MORE THAN JUST MOVIE SCREENINGS?
Yes, we’ll have related events with almost every film, along with additional activities.
