Ant Hall

Ant Hall debuted in 2017 as an outgrowth of Hamtramck’s Planet Ant improv comedy theater. The Hall and the Ghost Light, its adjacent bar, have doubled down on the Ant’s commitment to art and community with a consistent program of music, film and performance. 2320 Caniff St., Hamtramck

The Jam Handy

The building was part of the famed Jam Handy Organization, the Detroit-based business that was a powerhouse in the world of industrial, commercial and education films for much of the 20th Century. Long in disrepair, the building was bought in 2010 and since has been rehabbed to the point where it now regularly hosts arts events, weddings and other community activities. 2900 E. Cinema Detroit

Located in a converted former furniture factory in Midtown, Cinema Detroit runs seven days a week and is known for an eclectic, quirky and quality mix of contemporary, indie, cult, genre and classic movies. It’s participating in the Freep Film Festival for the fourth straight year. 4126 Third St., Detroit

Detroit Film Theatre

Located inside the Detroit Institute of Arts, it has been home since 1974 to the popular DFT series that features movies from around the globe — indie fare, documentaries, foreign films, thematic programming and more. The theater was built in 1927, which makes it the first major museum in North America to exhibit film as an art form. It’s been a key Freep Film Festival venue since the first year of the event. 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit

Detroit Historical Museum

Run by the Detroit Historical Society, this museum on Woodward Avenue (across from the DIA) was dedicated in 1951. Featuring popular exhibits like “The Streets of Old Detroit” and “Detroit: The Arsenal of Democracy,” the museum is also home to a small theater that will host Freep Film Festival events for the third straight year. 5401 Woodward Ave., Detroit

Emagine Royal Oak and Emagine Novi

Emagine Entertainment has nine theater locations in Michigan, including several throughout metro Detroit. It’s known for showing the latest in Hollywood fare and special events. The downtown Royal Oak location features a full-service restaurant and bar, bowling lanes and state-of-the-art projection and sound systems. This is its third year as part of Freep Film Festival. In its second year of the fest is Emagine Novi, which is in the Fountain Walk complex at Novi Road and I-96, and completed an extensive rehab in late 2017 that features the largest movie screen in the state. 200 N. The Fillmore Detroit

Located on Woodward Avenue across the street from Comerica Park, it is the latest incarnation of a historic movie house dating to 1925. With its 80-foot theater ceiling and grand chandeliers, it hosts concerts by top bands and solo artists from around the country. In recent years, it’s also been hosting film screenings, including Freep Film Festival opening night in 2014, ’15, ’17 and this year. 2115 Woodward Ave., Detroit

Marvin and Betty Danto Lecture Hall at the DIA

The smaller of the DIA’s two Freep Film Festival venues seats 300 and is near the Ancient Middle East Gallery and the Kresge Court. It’s been part of the Freep Film Festival since 2015. 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit

Redford Theatre

The historic Redford Theatre opened in 1928, a three-story movie and playhouse with a Barton organ and Japanese decorative motif. An extensive and ongoing rehab began in the early 2000s, and the theater remains a popular home for screenings of classic films — often complemented by organ performances. Wayne State University Welcome Center Auditorium

Opened in 2002, the Welcome Center is located at the corner of Woodward and Warren in the heart of the Wayne State campus. The Welcome Center will host screenings in its auditorium. 42 W. Warren Ave., Detroit

Wayne State University Community Arts Auditorium

Located in the Community Arts Building on Reuther Mall, the Community Arts Auditorium seats 560 in its spacious, theater-style confines. This is the first year it will be part of Freep Film Festival. 450 Reuther Mall, Detroit
