About the films

This double feature will pair a 60th anniversary screening of the courtroom classic that was filmed in the Upper Peninsula with a making-of documentary that explores the movie’s deep Michigan roots and the culture clash that resulted when a huge Hollywood crew landed in tiny Ishpeming. A regular on the list of all-time greatest American films, the Academy Award-nominated “Anatomy of a Murder” starred Jimmy Stewart as a small-time lawyer defending a murder case against a man (Ben Gazzara) who is accused of killing a man whom he claims raped his wife. Directed by Otto Preminger, it features of an all-star cast that includes Eve Arden, Lee Remick and George C. Scott and a famed score by Duke Ellington. The documentary gives the backstory on the film, which was based on the writings of Michigan fisherman and attorney John D. Voelker. Using the memoir of an inn hostess who interacted with many of the stars and crew as its backbone, the film features classic clips and photos, contemporary interviews and plenty of insight on one of the most-famed films ever made in Michigan. Metro Detroit premiere.
