Frequently asked
questions

WHEN AND WHERE IS THIS THING HAPPENING?

The festival will be held April 10-14, 2019. Expected venues include the Detroit Film Theatre at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Cinema Detroit, the Fillmore Detroit and Emagine Theatres. More will be announced as the festival nears.

WHAT KIND OF MOVIES WILL YOU BE SHOWING?

Documentaries. More specifically, documentaries with particular relevance to Detroit, metro Detroit or Michigan. We’ll feature films that explore issues that are important to the region, highlight its indelible personalities and celebrate it uniqueness.

DO YOU HAVE AN OFFICIAL SUBMISSION PROCESS?

Freep Film Festival is a curated, rather than submissions-based festival. The lineup will be built by Free Press festival staff in collaboration with venue partners.

I HAVE A FILM YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN. DO YOU WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT?

Absolutely. Our submission process is through Film Freeway. Tell us the details at Film Freeway. Or email us at freepfilmfestival@freepress.com. Include your contact info and a description of the film, along with whatever press materials you might have. Please don’t blow up our inbox with full movie files, but we’re very open to links to trailers or whole films. We cannot promise feedback or that your movie will definitely be viewed. Remember: The festival will focus on documentaries with strong Detroit or Michigan connections, though we’ll also be showing some films without specific ties that have resonance in the region.

WHEN WILL THE LINEUP BE ANNOUNCED?

We’ll have the lineup wrapped in early 2019, and will be announcing it in late February/early March. Lineup announcements will be made here, at freep.com and the print edition of the Detroit Free Press.

WILL THE FREEP FILM FEST BE MORE THAN JUST MOVIE SCREENINGS?

Yes, we’ll have related events with almost every film, along with additional activities.

HOW TICKETING WORKS

In most cases, tickets will be sold through this website, and then at the venue on the day-of screeningsFor the first time, festival passes and ticket packages will be available in 2019. Keep an eye here for more details to be announced soon.

IS THERE WAY TO KEEP UP WITH FESTIVAL NEWS?

As updates happen, we’ll be noting them at freep.com and this site’s news page. You can also follow us on Twitter @freep_film_fest and facebook.com/freepfilmfest.

WHY DID THE FREE PRESS TAKE THIS EVENT ON?

Many reasons. Here are a few:

• We recognize — and respect — the close relationship between documentary filmmaking and journalism.

• The festival is an excellent way to engage our current readers in fresh, exciting ways — and provide a platform to reach new audiences.

• We’re energized and excited by the way the metro Detroit arts community is always pushing to make Detroit a better place, and think we can play a part, too.

• We have a national Emmy-winning video team, and the festival provides opportunities to showcase its work.

ARE THERE SPONSORSHIP, ADVERTISING OR IN-KIND OPPORTUNITIES?

Definitely. Contact Nicole Berlin at nberlin@michigan.com.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS?

We expect to need a few. Keep an eye on the website’s news section for details in the coming months.
