About the film
Erik Nelson’s film takes an inside look at the daily life of men of the Eighth Air Force, who flew deadly missions during World War II. The film features newly restored 4K footage and outtakes that were shot by Oscar-winning director William Wyler for his 1944 documentary “The Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress” and recently discovered in the National Archives. Wyler documented the in-progress air war and flew actual combat missions on B-17 bombers (during which one of his DPs was killed). Featuring material from Wyler along with narration from some of the last surviving B-17 pilots, “The Cold Blue” is a meditation on youth, war and trauma, and stands as a tribute to one of the world’s great filmmakers.
