27 Jan ‘The Pretender’ + ‘Rocky III’ (DOUBLE FEATURE)

Eye of the tiger! This double feature at the Redford Theatre pairs the third installment of the Rocky franchise with a documentary (“The Pretender”) about a Rocky impersonator who is as relentless as the boxer he idolizes.

Directed by Sterling Heights resident Jim Toscano, “The Pretender” tracks Pennsylvania’s Mike Kunda over a five-year period as he leaves his comfortable middle-class life behind to follow his dream of becoming a full-time impersonator and “Rocky” tour guide. Kunda has his share of doubters and setbacks, but like Rocky, he’s determined to go the distance.

The top-grossing film of 1982, “Rocky III” sees the dethroned heavyweight champ teaming with former rival Apollo Creed to take on the brutish Clubber Lang, played in a breakout performance by Mr. T.

“The Pretender”: 2017, 50 minutes. Directed by Jim Toscano. Unrated; some adult language.

“Rocky III”: 1982. 1 hour, 39 minutes. Directed by Sylvester Stallone. Rated PG-13; intense boxing violence and thematic material.

4 p.m. Sat., April 14, The Redford Theatre

Between the films: Free Press staff writer Jim Schaefer talks to Mike Kunda, director Jim Toscano and editor Danny Gianino.

Bring your appetite: Cheri Baby Cafe will be on hand to sell Philly cheesesteaks on rolls straight from Amoroso’s Bakery in Philadelphia.

Try “The Pretender” brew: On Tuesday April 11, Eastern Market Brewing Co., at 2515 Riopelle in Eastern Market, will release a beer in honor of the film. “The Pretender,” is a dry hopped pale ale with Apollo hops.
