About these events

In addition to screening dozens of documentaries at this year’s festival, Freep Film Festival is looking to help some great movies get made.

The 10th annual festival is hosting a variety of free events geared toward the local filmmaking community. The gatherings are designed to share knowledge about documentary filmmaking and provide networking opportunities for up-and-coming moviemakers.

Expert guests and filmmakers from around the country will be on hand for the proceedings.

Meet the Editors

The Meet the Editors event is geared toward students, emerging filmmakers and others with an interest in the world of documentary filmmaking. At an informal gathering, attendees will be able to engage and network with leading film editors in the documentary sphere. This event will feature Doug Blush, a Michigan native and Oscar-winning editor and producer whose work includes “20 Feet from Stardom” and this year’s Academy Award winning documentary short “The Elephant Whisperer,” and Carla Gutierrez, editor of the Oscar nominated “RBG,” the story of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, and “La Corona” a documentary short about a beauty pageant in a Colombian prison for women. It will be moderated by Detroit Free Press executive video producer, Brian Kaufman, director and editor of “Coldwater Kitchen,” the festival’s opening night film.

Light refreshments will be available.

Festival After Parties

Here’s a great opportunity to do a little informal socializing either before or after catching a movie. Freep Film Festival is partnering with two cool local venues on casual events designed to connect attendees with filmmakers and festival staffers. There is no charge for admission.

Kiesling: Located in Detroit’s Milwaukee Junction neighborhood, Kiesling is a cozy bar in a cool corner building with a patio, fireplace, and a rich history. With murals dating to the early 20th Century when this bar served the workers at Ford’s Model T plant, this reimagined space serves beer, wine, and creative craft cocktails. Kiesling will offer 20% off cocktails to anyone with a festival ticket stub or pass. 8 p.m.-midnight Thurs., April 27.

Two Birds: This neighborhood bar located in Detroit’s West Village neighborhood doubles as a custard shop. It features indoor seating and an outdoor patio, and there also will be a food pop-up on the premises. Two Birds will offer 20% off drinks to anyone with a festival ticket stub or pass (excludes custard and full bottles of wine). 8 p.m.-midnight Sat., April 29.
